In this paper, we introduce the fabrication and properties of carboxymethyl cellulose nanofiber (CMCF) hydrogels with high compression recoverability, macroporosity, and nontoxic properties by utilizing the phase separation phenomenon of ice crystals and solutes that occurs during freezing of aqueous solutions. The features of the developed freeze cross-linked CMCF hydrogel include that it can be made from harmless raw materials with simple procedure, high water content, and biodegradability. By taking advantage of these properties, this hydrogel synthesis technique can contribute to expanding the use of cellulose derivatives as environmental purifiers, functional materials, etc.

Although orientational ordering is commonly observed for other ice phases, it has not been reported for ice IV. We conducted powder neutron diffraction experiments for DCl-doped DO ice IV to investigate hydrogen ordering in ice IV. We found abrupt changes in the temperature derivative of unit cell volume, dV/dT, at about 120 K, and revealed their slightly ordered structure at low temperatures based on the Rietveld method. The occupancy of the D1 site deviates from 0.5; it increased when samples were cooled at higher pressures and reached 0.282(5) at 2.38 GPa, 58 K. Our results evidence the presence of a low-symmetry hydrogen-ordered state corresponding to ice IV. It seems, however, difficult to experimentally access the completely ordered phase corresponding to ice IV by slow cooling at high pressure.

An evaluation method for reactivity feedback due to core deformation during reactor power increase in sodium-cooled fast reactors is being developed for realistic core design evaluation. In this evaluation method, fuel assembly bowing was modeled with a beam element of the finite element method, and the assembly's pad contact between adjacent assemblies was modeled with a dedicated element which could consider the wrapper tube cross-sectional distortion and the pad stiffness depending on pad contact conditions. This fuel assembly bowing analysis model was verified for thermal bowing of a single assembly and assembly pad contact between adjacent assemblies in a core as past benchmark problems. The calculation results by this model showed good agreement with those of reference solutions of theoretical solutions or results by participating institutions in the benchmark. This study confirmed that the analysis model was able to calculate thermal assembly bowing appropriately.

In general, complex DNA damage formed in cells can be detected experimentally by fluorescence microscopy, because the area around the damage site emits light like a focus point when a fluorophore is used. However, this detection method has not been able to analyze the degree of complexity of DNA damage. Therefore, in this study, we addressed on the measured focus size and evaluated the degree of complexity of DNA damage using a track structure analysis code. As a result, we found that as DNA damage becomes more complex, the focus size also increases. Our findings are expected to provide a new analytical method for elucidating the initial factors of radiation biological effects.

It is important to determine whether a sample is a single phase or not in order to improve the quality of ferroelectrics. Therefore, we have succeeded in developing a detection method for trace amounts of segregated phases by using two-body correlation distribution function (PDF) in addition to X-ray diffraction, which has been conventionally used to detect impurities. In the X-ray diffraction pattern of the BaTiO-BiFeO solid solution, it appears as a single phase with a rhombohedral structure. However, when the PDF was calculated from the obtained diffraction pattern, it was found that not only the component derived from the rhombohedral crystal structure calculated from the average structure but also the BaTiO component was mixed and segregated. By using PDF in this way, it has become possible to detect fine segregation phases on the order of nanoscale.

Times Cited Count:3 Percentile:68.71(Materials Science, Multidisciplinary)9Cr oxide dispersion strengthened steels with slightly different nitrogen concentrations (0.0034 - 0.029 wt%) were prepared and their creep property at 973 K was investigated with microstructural characterization before and after the creep test. The creep strength decreased significantly as the nitrogen concentration increased. Microstructural observation revealed that, in the higher nitrogen concentration specimen, coarse Y-rich inclusions were found along the boundary between transformed ferrite region and residual ferrite region. The solubility difference of nitrogen in and phase would induce the localized increment of nitrogen concentration in the boundary region during the austenitizing process, resulting in the thermodynamic destabilization and subsequent coarsening of the dispersed oxide particles. The rows of creep voids were found near the rupture part of the crept specimen, suggesting that the coarse inclusions were the starting point of creep void formation and the subsequent premature fracture.

We demonstrated the advantage of spin-contrast-variation neutron reflectometry on the structure analysis of buried interface between resin and porous silica layers. The interface structure was not reproduced by the normal Gaussian model, but by the asymmetric interface model where crosslinked polymer chains neither permeate the pore nor follow the surface roughness of the silica layer.

First, when XAFS experiments were performed and sample screening was performed, it was found that structural fluctuations were large in the BiFeO-rich composition. Therefore, PDF analysis of a sample with BiFeO-rich composition was performed. As a result, it was found that although the average structure is a cubic structure, the local structure can be reproduced with a rhombohedral crystal structure, and there is a displacement that breaks the symmetry of the rhombohedral structure in a composition with a large fluctuation.

We performed local structural analysis using high-quality BNT with a stoichiometrically correct composition, and found a chemical order structure of Bi/Na in locally. BNT undergoes a phase transition to a cubic phase at 400C. We estimated that a new disorder structure will appear in the high-temperature phase. In the high temperature phase, pair distribution function (PDF) analysis using synchrotron radiation high-energy X-rays was performed. As a result, we found that Bi shifts from 200C, and this shift becomes an order parameter for the phase transition.

For design optimization of fast reactors, in order to consider the feedback reactivity due to thermal deformation of the core when the core temperature rises, which could not be considered in the conventional design analysis, a neutronics, thermal-hydraulics, and structure mechanics coupled analysis method has been developed. Neutronics code, plant dynamics code, and structural mechanics code are coupled by a control module in python script. This paper outlines the coupling method of analysis codes and the results of its application to an experiment in an actual plant.
